From Walker Wins to Ankle Spasms

My makeshift ice boot

Hi everyone, sorry I didn’t post last week. I’ve been feeling really good on my current Crohn’s medication dose, and for the first time in ages, I decided it was time to get back into my walker. It’s been a long journey, and I was excited to stand and move again without relying solely on my wheelchair.

Using the walker reminded me how empowering small steps can feel after so long. The simple act of standing at eye level with my surroundings brought a mix of joy and determination. I was hopeful that this would mark the start of more active days ahead.

I’m still not entirely sure what happened, but the next morning I woke up with an extremely sore ankle.

By Monday afternoon, I couldn’t bear any weight on it, even the toe and ankle straps of my wheelchair felt unbearable. Random spasms shot through my foot, tensing up my entire leg in agony

It quickly turned into one of the most painful episodes I’ve had in a while.

After two days of Tylenol and constant icing, I finally called my doctor and got an appointment.

  1. Prescribed a low dose of baclofen to calm the spasms

  2. Went from 30-minute pain episodes down to just a few minutes each

  3. Received a work excuse letter for the rest of the week

That combination gave me the break and relief I desperately needed.

Hopped up on baclofen and drifting in and out of sleep, I found myself on a random online shopping spree. Without fully realizing what I was doing, I added items like:

  • Memory foam pillows in fun shapes

  • A bright-yellow travel mug

  • A quirky moon-shaped desk lamp

  • “Traveler’s essential” gadget (no idea what it does!)

My bank account is still recovering from that hazy shopping cart! Okay, most of these I didn’t actually buy, but the pillows did show up at my door yesterday!

Back to My (Mostly) Normal

I’m now off the muscle relaxers and feeling close to my version of normal again. I’m icing the ankle, doing gentle stretches, and planning a slow return to trying my walker again.

Hopefully, by next week, I’ll have a more entertaining—and less painful—story to share. Thanks for sticking with me through the ups and downs!

Have you ever had a surprise injury derail your week? Or ended up buying things you barely remember? Drop your stories below—I’d love to hear them!
